However, the rise of Airbnb style holiday lets over recent years has affected these traditional guesthouses. Some of the owners of the guesthouses on this street mention that Airbnb is having some negative effects on their traditional trading. Hamoaze House charity has been around for twenty years. The charity works with the community and Hamoaze charity shop on West Hoe Road is one of the charity’s outreach projects. There's also specials including "Ruby's Raspberry Special," named after Plymouth's "number one ice cream lady" the late Ruby Smith, and chocolate, toffee, bubblegum and raspberry sundaes. It’s the best charity shop ever.” says customer Jane, she lives around the corner and visits Hamoaze charity shop every day for a glamorous bargain.

The company's franchise in Australia continued until the mid-1970s, after which the physical vehicle fleet was renamed and sold to several private operators. In 1982, the trademark "Mr. Whippy" was registered in Australia by ice cream parlour company Mr. Whippy Pty Ltd. Today, the Franchised Food Company owns the brand. It's all about the cones with this one, Super Whippy offers oyster cones, marshmallow cones, pink sherbet cones, blue sherbet cones, shermellow cones, sprinkles cones and choc nut cones.

How it Works

Ahhhh, Mr Whippy! He’s one of the most iconic British ice creams, mostly associated with the seaside or enjoyed with a flake – but neither of these are strictly necessary extras, and I know because I've eaten many, many Mr Whippys in my lifetime. It might seem entirely impossible to make your own at home, especially since Whippy machines are very expensive - but don't worry, I got you. It starts off fun and somewhat cliched. There is a bubbling darkness in the story but I guess I was reading it from the point of view of the woman being young free (as free as one can be with 5 kids) and single. But as the story goes on it gets darker. Also, down this way, there's a little cove that appears at low tide and at high tide it can be a lovely swimming or water sports spot. It doesn’t seem to have a name, but it’s located down some steps beside the popular Maritimo cafe and tapas restaurant. We met Keith last year (you can read our previous article here) and it seems his coffee shop and ice cream van are just as popular as ever!

It's a stunning wild swimming spot on the right tide and a warm day. Close to this cove you'll find Mrs Whippy, selling delicious ice-creams all year round from her van with a viewHer five difficult sons worship their father and blame Emelda for his leaving them. On top of everything else she has to struggle with a new job at the local supermarket where she ends up working with her eldest son's girlfriend. For comfort she turns to her one true friend - ice cream. This shop has been here for five years as one of Hamoaze House charity’s outreach projects, we have a 50/50 team, half of our team are the public and half are clients from the Hamoaze charity that have got to a point in their life where they no longer need sessions and continuous support, but they do need something to do with their spare time. They come in, they choose their rotas with us and help us out. Mr-Whippy-style soft-serve ice-cream originated in the US about a decade before Thatcher worked at J Lyons, it reports. When soft-serve arrived in the UK, J Lyons was indeed at the forefront – but it had teamed up with the US ice-cream behemoth Mister Softee and operated franchises under that name. There’s a large children's play park in the West Hoe area, on Pier Street, with a sea and pirate theme, it’s busy in the holiday season. Surrounding the kid’s play park is West Hoe Park which has some beautiful trees including a fig tree and a well-established palm, giving a continental feel to the place on a sunny day, with its fabulous sea views.

Business partner, Scott Yeardley, used to be a weapons engineer in the Navy and has spent a lot of time in submarines. He still dives at several worldwide locations and he was one of the media team during former EastEnders star Ross Kemp’s underwater dive in Plymouth. he says: Thatcher was a food research scientist at J Lyons but, as a Royal Society article noted in May 2011, the details of her work there are sketchy. She reportedly worked on the quality of cake and pie fillings as well as ice-cream, and researched saponification (soap-making).

After a fabulous afternoon with loved ones, there's just one more thing you need before you go home: a top of the range ice cream (or maybe a pasty, three of which we reviewed last week).
