If visiting children will be around your chinchillas they will need to be supervised when interacting with them. Chinchilla lifespan Chinchillas need a regular dust bath to maintain their luxurious coat, and traditional chinchilla dust is the material of choice for most owners. However, there is now an alternative: chinchilla bath sand. Some people like to keep the sand bath in their hamster’s cage so it has the option every day, whereas others like to offer it less frequently. Before we move on to the conclusion, we’ve summarized this article into a short list of key points for you to remember:

A dust bath of chinchilla sand (available from most pet shops) should be provided so your gerbil can keep their coat clean and in good condition. Some gerbils will toilet in their dust bath, so make sure you remove it and replace when they do. Enrichment and exercise for gerbils A dust bath helps maintain their fur and keep them healthy by removing excess oils, skin flakes, and dirt. Make sure you hoover any dust surrounding the tub and clean the bath with a damp cloth- ready for next time!Typically chinchillas should bathe for three to five minutes per session. The sand in a chinchilla bathhouse should be about 2 inches deep so the chinchilla can move around and get fully covered with dust. Chinchillas are gentle, intelligent and inquisitive with a dense, highly attractive coat. They are active in the evening but are not purely nocturnal, and are native to the Andes Mountains of Chile in South America. An adult chinchilla will measure about 25 cm long, excluding the tail. CHOOSING YOUR CHINCHILLA First, you need your supplies. Grab yourself some chinchilla sand. But beware! There's a vast difference between chinchilla sand and chinchilla dust. You don't want chinchilla dust; it can cause respiratory issues in small animals. With regular dust baths, and providing their teeth are in good condition, chinchillas can maintain their own fur. Handling your chinchillas

That said, some chinchillas may require longer or shorter bath times, depending on their individual needs. Be sure to observe your chinchilla during the bath and adjust the duration as needed. How do chinchillas bathe in the wild? You should never bathe your chinchilla with water as this can cause hypothermia – their fur is so dense that it takes a long time to dry. A proper dust bath should last around 10 minutes for a chinchilla to truly enjoy the experience and come away fully clean; you should never skimp on your time in the dust.

Beaphar are one of the most trusted and beloved pet-care brands in the UK, especially when it comes to providing health care tools at home. an enclosed bed to sleep in during the day – this needs to be big enough for all the chinchillas in the cage to curl up together if they want to As with all rodents, chinchilla teeth are always growing so they need plenty of hard material to eat and chew on. Chinchillas are very nervous and flighty so they don't really like being stroked or handled. Because of this they're not ideal for children who are looking for a pet to hold as they're quite an exotic creature with very specific needs. Of course, we appreciate that all children are unique so, if your children enjoy watching animals - instead of handling them - these fascinating creatures will make interesting family pets.

In the wild, chinchillas roll in volcanic ash to keep their fur clean and healthy. In captivity, chinchilla dust baths provide a similar function. By rolling around in the sand, chinchillas can remove dirt, oil, and other debris from their fur. Water baths are rarely recommended for hamsters, as most hamsters will hate being immersed in water and will avoid it if given the option. Grooming as we know it – with a good bath and a brush - isn't needed for chinchillas. In the wild they use fine sand to keep their coats clean and in prime condition. So, you'll need to provide this for them in the form of a dust bath. How often should chinchillas have a dust bath? Gently place your pet in the bath and monitor them closely until they have finished bathing (which will be when they stop shaking, rolling and flipping)- normally this will be after about 10-15 minutes.Once you are seeing positive signs, like them wanting to be close to each other, you can move the cages and beds closer until the chinchillas are sleeping next to each other in their separate cages The various manufacturers' textured pastes are all very well but, as you point out, can be expensive for larger areas. My approach so far has been to use silver sand laid on PVA and then treated with pigments, but that gives a coarser finish than yours. Diet: Pets should be offered the correct type and volume of food to cover all their nutritional needs alongside access to clean, fresh water.
