However, the big draw of this book is Scotty's tawdry times running a makeshift queer brothel out of a gas station on Hollywood Blvd.

When he reflects back on past mores or his reason for doing what he did, he suddenly sounds like the 86 year old Scotty Bowers narrating the story. As far as outing them, it really does seem like Scotty waited until nearly everyone was gone, and he was almost a nonagenarian to tell his tale. But he does his best and I appreciated it and the fact that for him love came first and then the sex was affected by its presence. I'll get to the details of his sexual exploits later, but this former Marine also details his time serving in the Armed Forces in the Pacific. If you ever suspected that Spencer Tracy was bisexual and Tyrone Power a coprophiliac, and if you happen to believe everything you read, here is all the testimony you require. Roddy McDowall was another guy I came to know well and who, like Jimmy and Monty, usually went around with his nose up in the air. The Atlantic Wire "The Scotty I knew was a guy who always seemed to be enjoying his life working morning, noon and night, with never a gripe; always with a smile to greet you, and never with an axe to grind. The strangest aspect here was the vitriol Bowers exhibited towards those few celebrities who somehow managed to not sleep with him.

But finally got a good copy, and it is one I am going to hang on to and re-read again and again I am sure. If they had had the chance to be out and in the open like their contemporaries today, I don't think most of them would have stayed in the closet. The list of whom he did is almost dizzying: Vivien Leigh, George Cukor, Cole Porter (after he got his wooden leg, no less), Tab Hunter, Edith Piaf, Cecil Beaton, Spencer Tracy, Raymond Burr, Noel Coward, etc. Bowers is still alive (in his late 80s) and I suspect he's a more interesting man than his memoir discloses. Can't entirely pin down whether it was the tone/style, all the people name-dropped, or the salaciousness of it all, but the book leaves you inclined not to believe a word of it.I have to confess that at several points during Scotty Bowers' sin-sational Hollywood tell-all, Full Service, I would forget that I was reading something allegedly from the non-fiction shelves. Most earth-shakingly, perhaps, he relates how he was invited to a four-dude weekend where one of the men was J. After reading what he witnessed on that beach, I would understand living a life without a shred of shame (especially about sex, which people should not feel ashamed about, anyway). These exploits included not just gay and lesbian members of the community, but bi ones as well — And Scotty "tricked" with them all.

He even talks about how sad he is that one actress terminated her pregnancy (they were both married to other people) and wonders what that baby would have been like had the actress kept it. Some are almost mind-blowingly unlikely (again, Charles Laughton…oof), and yet, the only ones that really feel off are the times when he claims things about activities with civilians, not people in Hollywood. Asked about this in a recent phone interview, Bowers' response was: "Not only did I do all the things I said I did in the book, I did even more.Eventually, he established himself as a bartender and event-arranger/caterer and became a Hollywood fixture as the go-to guy for quick sleazy sex, the most well-esteemed person in Hollywood that no one outside Hollywood ever heard of.

He was very good-looking, and flexible, so the "tricking" he speaks of began as servicing men who wanted blow jobs or more – Walter Pidgeon (Mr Miniver!Cary Grant, Rock Hudson, George Cukor, Katharine Hepburn and Vivien Leigh are among those named by Bowers, now 88. The secret lives of the stars exist only to make their screened moments shine with glamour and mystery.
