He owned a Hasselblad 500 but didn’t like to use it as he found it too heavy and too noisy, opting to only use it for studio and commissioned shoots. His dreamlike and erotic photos were like peeping through a keyhole, spied moments of heightened reality. AtTrieste, he boarded the ‘Conte Rosso’ (along with about 200 others escaping the Nazis) intending to journey toChina. Taking with him a small bag of belongings and two still cameras, he instead got off in Singapore. Going It Alone With an illustrious career spanning five decades, Helmut Newton is widely recognized as one of the greatest photographers of the 20 th century. Helmut Newton. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes, Annenberg Space for Photography, Los Angeles

After extensive research, I’ve compiled everything I could find out about Newton and his career into one easy to read post. In 1946, Newton set up shop in fashionableFlinders Lane in Melbourneand worked in fashionand theatre photography in the affluent post-war years. Junelarge retrospective for his 80th birthday in the New National Gallery (Neue Nationalgalerie) in Berlin that travels to London, New York, Tokyo, Moscow and Prague, among others. The appearance at auction at Christie’s, New York, of the only known print – the artist’s proof, in dramatic life-size format, and with full provenance – of a close variation of the most celebrated of the series, "Big Nude III" (Variation), Paris, adds a major work to Newton’s documented corpus. In 1956, Newton partnered with fellow German refugee, Henry Talbot, and changed his studio name to Helmut Newton and Henry Talbot. The pair specialized in fashion and advertising photography. They continued their partnership even after Newton left for Europe. London Calling

In addition to the more than 100 prints displayed, the exhibit will feature two films about Newton. It was for this reason that feminist Alice Schwarzer accused Newton of getting off on "breaking a strong woman." Timeless photographs expose their audience The Hollywood film The Eyes of Laura Mars starring Faye Dunaway was inspired by Helmut’s photos. Ironically, the photos he contributed to the film were rejected as the director of the film wanted more blood and corpses, which were of no interest to Helmut.

One thing can be said for Helmut, was that he enjoyed a succés de scandale, whether photographing a German model as a Russian spy by the Berlin War, or fashion models posed wearing a saddle or representing women as men. Speaking of Bellmer in one of our previous articles, we highlighted his urge to create a doll that could satisfy secret desires. He also tried to turn the alive body of his girlfriend Unica Zürn into kind of a flexible doll using what we call now the shibari technique. Shots of Helmut Newton with a touch of sadism (e. g. “Domestic Nudes”) display a similar intention: fashion photographer underlines the fact that models are mannequins (see his juxtaposition of a model and her plastic twin). Two years later he was forced to flee Germany as the Nazis carried out the " Kristallnacht" pogrom. With two cameras in his luggage, he fled to Australia via Singapore. He would never see his parents again.

During the 1980s, Newton completed his now internationally renowned ‘Naked & Dressed’series, which he later described as the most technically difficult series of pictures he ever produced. My grades, in school, were deplorable, I was a dunce. Since my classes ended at 1 PM when I was fourteen years old, I got a job as an assistant to a photographer without telling my parents. This lasted for six months. My school grades became worse and worse; So finally, my father confiscated all my cameras and confined me to the house. By the time I was sixteen, my parents no longer had any hope. Helmut Newton – 1976 April/May issue of Penthouse Photo World Helmut the Apprentice Whilst other photographers, such as Irving Penn and Richard Avedon moved fashion photography to a more glamorous, artful presentation often working with celebrities. I think things are complicated enough without making them more so, I think this is why my technical equipment is very simple, very basicbecause it gives me more time to work with the girl which is the most important thing. June Newton (alias Alice Springs) begins her career as a photographer: when her husband is ill, she steps in to shoot a cigarette advertisement. Browne later became a successful photographer under the pseudonym Alice Springs (afterAlice Springs, the Australian town.)
